Controls System Engineer/Programmer

Northern Michigan package handling and conveyance integrator is seeking an experienced controls engineer to design material handling system controls that meet national, jurisdictional, and customer requirements.  Our customers include the largest warehousing and distribution companies in the United States.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program and Commission: Able to develop and implement necessary programming (Rockwell Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, and Ignition v8) of PLCs, HMI, and SCADA systems along with configuring device settings to accomplish desired functionality of a system.
  • Design and Development: Provide, or facilitate, complete controls documentation for all jobs; schematics, assembly drawings, bill of materials, manuals, description of operation, etc.
  • System Analysis: Evaluate electrical systems, products, components, and applications through design and research.
  • Testing and Troubleshooting: Ensure the robustness and safety of control components through rigorous testing. Able to understand and resolve electrical and programming issues efficiently.
  • Project Management: Oversee the manufacturing process for electrical systems and manage projects to ensure timely completion.
  • Compliance: Ensure all electrical systems comply with customer specifications, including industry standards and regulations around powered conveyance. Including but not limited to UL508A and NFPA79.
  • Maintenance: Upgrade and maintain existing control specifications to reduce costs and enhance efficiency and longevity.
  • Support and Training: Provide support and training to other technicians and users on new or modified systems.

Day-to-Day Tasks:

  • Develop control systems per application requirements.
  • Collaborate with teams to understand and meet customer specifications.
  • Develop and test electrical systems and components.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and technicians to design and apply new system processes.
  • Perform quality and performance analysis on new and legacy systems.
  • Prepare cost estimates and project timelines.
  • Provide manufacturing and customer support related to controls and wiring solutions for conveyance applications.

Education and Certification Requirements:

  • Experience: Proven experience in a system controls programming and engineering role, preferably within the manufacturing or case handling industry.
  • Skills: Proven experience implementing controls systems using tools like CAD, MATLAB, LabView, and Allen Bradley software (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, etc.) with a focus on PLC controls provided with conveyor or similar systems.

Salary up to $100k DOE

Yearly discretionary bonus
